Udupi Travel Guide – Part 1

malpe-beach-udupi Udupi is the famous temple city in South India. Udupi is better known for the Krishna temple established by Madhavacharya, the great Sanskrit scholar in the thirteenth century. The legends say that Madhavacharya rescued a Krishna image from the remains of a shipwreck and installed the same where the great Krishna Temple stands as of date.

Location: It is located in Karnataka and situated at a distance of fifty eight kilometers from mangalore.

More info:
1. The famous Manipal Medical Institutue is located at a distance of just three kilometers from Udupi.
2. The famous and delicious pure vegetarian South Indian cuisine originated in Udupi.
3. For shopping you can head to the popular Car street area in the middle of the city in Udupi.
4. The statue of Krishna in the famous Krishna Temple is adorned with a real diamond crown costing over one crore rupees. On pious days the deity statue is robed with diamond  clothes.
5. The pious bath tank known as the Madhva Sarovar is known to be filled by the Ganges after every 12 years.
6. The chief festival of Udupi is Saptotsava and is celebrated every year in the month of January.

How to reach:
Air: The closest airport is located in Mangalore and is called Bajpe. It is at a distance of about sixty kilometers from Udupi. You can catch daily flights in and out of Mangalore to Mumbai and Bangalore from this airport.
Rail: The railway station in Udupi is well connected with major Indian cities as it is located on the Konkan Railway Line.
Road: The city of Mangalore is at a distance of only fifty kilometers from Udupi. Tourist buses are available on hire from Mangalore to Udupi and other way round. From Bangalore it takes only one nights journey to reach Udupi.  From Mumbai it takes twenty hours to reach Udupi by road.

Chief tourist places in Udupi:

1. Malpe Beach: Maple is a well known fishing harbor on the western coast. A drive along this beach is amazingly relaxing as well as thrilling. To reach this place you need to travel five kilometers west from the Udupi town. This place is gifted with natural beauty. You can also take a rejuvenating dip in the sea and laze around on the beach. The Vadabhandeshwara Temple on the beach is well known for the image of deity Sri Balarama.

2. St Mary’s Island: This picturesque island is located at a distance of fifty eight kilometers to the north of Mangalore and very close to the Malpe beach port. This is a famous picnic point. It is said that Vasco Da Gama first reached the shores of this island before he reached Calicut in the year 1498. This island is also famous for the basalt rocks which have over the year crystalized into columns and split up in hexangular mosaic. You can easily reach this island from Malpe by ferrying a fishing boat. You must carry drinking water and some eatables as there are no decent restaurants on the island.

3. Maravanthe Beach: This beach is a breathtaking place along the coast. It is at a distance of fifty five kilomters from Udupi and nine kilometers from Kundapur. On the west you will be greeted by the magnificent Arabian Sea and on the east the swiftly flowing Sowparnika River rejuvenates your senses.
