Shopping Madness In Delhi

by mansiagarwal on July 27, 2009

bazaarmarket Delhi has been my favorite city for a long-long time. I simply love this city and cannot imagine living away from it, ever. I enjoy Delhi most for the variety of shopping hangouts this city has to offer. Whether its malls, flea markets, designer showrooms, heritage stores, this city has it all. In this post I will share with you information about three of the most significant and cheerful shopping hangouts in Delhi.

Delhi Haat: Food and Crafts Bazaar
Delhi Haat, situated opposite INA market in Delhi, is one of the most popular weekend hangouts joint. If you are in Delhi and wish to catch a glimpse of India’s rich heritage and culture then you have to visit Delhi Haat. Here you will find craftsmen from various Indian states selling their intricately handcrafted goods such as lac jewelry, puppets, terracotta pots, wood furniture, textiles, sandalwood carvings, traditional Indian apparels made of pure cotton and silk. After shopping it is time for you to head towards the food stalls within Delhi Haat to taste the delicacies of various Indian states. You will find food stalls for every Indian state in Delhi Haat. On weekends, Delhi Haat is abuzz with carefree visitors and at times traditional dance shows or cultural acts as well, on weekdays the excitement level is bit low. So my suggestion is that you visit this place on weekend and with your family. The entry fee is also quite minimal.

Sarojini Nagar Market
If you feel like shopping endlessly but do not want to be broke for the rest of the month, head straight to Sarojini Nagar market, Delhi. This market is overloaded with cheap yet trendy clothes, bags and footwear to such an extent that first time visitors often feel that even one whole day in this market is not enough. This place is most visited by young people. If you do decide to visit this market, and I will say you must, then don’t forget to carry your bargaining skills along with you. Also, don’t be lured by shop keepers pursuing you to checkout their shops, follow your own judgment and just shop from where you want to. This market is closed on Mondays.

Janpath Market
Janpath Market is located right in the middle of Connaught Place. It is the best place to buy latest junk jewelry and trendy clothes at affordable prices, just like Sarojini Nagar market. Those traveling on a limited budget as well as those who wish to flaunt the latest trends should visit Janpath Market, Delhi. This market is extremely popular with foreign travelers. There are quite a few showrooms also on the sidewalk on this market, however, true essence of shopping at Janpath could only be enjoyed at the legion stalls that have been put up there. One thing to keep in mind while shopping at this market is to bargain to your heart’s content, you would be amazed that shopkeepers actually sell their goods at forty to sixty percent lower than what they initially asked for. Janpath is centrally located and very well accessible through Delhi Metro. The closest Delhi metro station is Rajeev Chowk. This market is officially closed on Sundays, however, some shopkeepers keep their stores or stalls open on Sunday as well.

Best time to shop in Delhi:
November, December and January if you love chilly winters
March, April, September and October if you like the weather to be pleasant
