Matheran is the nearest hill town from Mumbai. This hill town was discovered by Britishers in the 19th century and later on it was developed into a favored summer retreat. It is at a height of eight hundred meters above the sea level. This tranquil hill station renders a relaxing escape from the scorching heat of the town. The fact that makes this town a favored destination amongst city dwellers is that all vehicles are prohibited here, no cycles allowed either. Anyone who wishes to escape from the numbing traffic and pollution of the city should come to this city for a nice calming break.
Location:
Matheran is situated at a distance of hundred kilometers from Mumbai (a city in Maharashtra).
How to reach Matheran
You must be wondering that since no vehicles are allowed in this hill town how do you get to it. Getting to this town is a joyride. Most interesting option is the joyful and easy journey from Neral on the toy train. The toy train journey takes two hours to reach Matheran. To reach Neral from Mumbai, you can opt for either local train or an express train, both are frequently available.
You can also take a cab from Neral to Dasturi Point. Dasturi Point is the last point till which vehicles are allowed, if you are taking your own car then you can park it here for couple of days. From this point you can either opt for a horse ride or a hand pulled rickshaw. However, since you have come to enjoy the nature I would suggest you walk along the rail line and make your way up to the hill town, it will take you twenty minutes to half an hour depending upon your pace.
Cost and Fees
A Capitation tax is levied upon visitors entering Matheran. However, it is quite affordable with Rs 25 for adults and only Rs 10 for kids.
The Whether
Due to the high altitude, Matheran is a cool and dry place as compared to the nearby towns like Mumbai as well as Pune. However, the temperature is never extreme, in summers the temperature climbs upto 35 Degrees Celsius and in winters it drops down to 15 degree celcius. Heavy monsoon rainfall Is experienced in the months from June to September. During the monsoons the rain tends to get muddy and slippery as there are very few concrete paths. During monsoons many shops and service providers are closed and even the frequency of the toy train is reduced. Apart from the monsoon season you can plan your visit anytime. The main tourist season is from middle of September till middle of October right after the monsoon rains have swept the entire hill.
Main attractions
Exploring this scenic hill on a horseback is quite exhilarating. There are thick surrounding forests and long walking paths which offers an amazing panoramic view. This town has lot of view points all around the hill. The most popular hill points are the Panorama Point for sunrise and Louise Point and Porcupine Point for sunset viewing.
