Mangalore is an amazing picturesque city with lot of greenery around. Mangalore is a harbor city located on the western coastal region of India. Many great sages like Kanva, Vysa, Vashista as well as Vishwamitra and many more have spent their long years of meditation in the enchanted Sahyadri Mountains in Mangalore. Plentiful rivers winding down the mountain slopes along with lush green surroundings are extremely rejuvenating to the senses.
Places to visit in Mangalore:
1. Shri Sharavu Mahaganapathi Temple: Shri Sharavu Mahaganapathi temple houses many enshrines devoted to Sharavu, Kadri, Mangaladevi and Kudroli. However, the one that really astounds all in the eight hundred year old enshrine of Sri Sharavu Sharabeshwara in the Sri Mahaganapathi Kshetra.
2. Sultan Battery: This place is situated at an approximate distance of five kilometers from Mangalore in Boloor. Sultan Battery is a magnificient watchtower made of black stones. This watch tower is built by the great ruler Tipu Sultan to prevent any attack by warships entering from River Gurupur. The watch-tower is as a matter of fact a mini fortress with provisions to load cannons. The remains of this fort are known as Tippu’s Well. Sultan Battery as of date is a deserted ruin, however, the architecture is mind baffling.
3. Kadri Manjunath Temple: As the name suggests Kadri Manjunath Temple is located in Kadri Hills and is devoted to Lord Manjunatheshwara. This temple was built somewhere around the tenth century and houses the oldest known statue of Lord Manjunathaswamy. This statue is made of bronze and is also said to be one of the best metal statue that is in India as of date. This temple has nine tanks and a square shaped temple and it rests at the foot of the highest hill in Mangalore. This temple is also known for the sanctum stream of water that flows thru the gap in a cow’s head like formation known as Gomukha. This water is said to have curative power. While you are at the temple you can also visit the stone caves known as pandavas at the hilltop.
4. St. Aloysius Church: This church is located at a distance of one kilometer from the Nehru Maidan Bus stop. This church was built in the year 1899. The walls of this church are beautifully adorned with the artwork of Antony Moshaini a famous Italian artist.
5. Shri Sharavu Mahaganapathi Temple: Every year Mangalore is visited by thousands of pilgrims because this city boasts of numerous holy shrines and temples. Shri Sharavu Mahaganapathi Temple houses shrines devoted to Sharavu, Kadri, Mangaladevi, Kudroli… however, out of all these shrines the Sri Sharavu Sharabeshwara is one of the most sacred enshrine of all. The shrine of Sri Sharavu Sharabeshwara in the Sri Mahaganapathi Kshetra is about eight hundred years old.
6. Shreemanthi Bai Memorial Museum: This museum is located in Bejai which is at a distance of four kilometers from Nehru Maidan bus stop in the city. One gets to see timeless idols and other things of great historical importance here. This archaeological museum was established by the Indian Government in Mangalore in the year nineteen-sixty. Mangalore and its surrounding places are places of great historical significance. This museum was built in order to preserve and safeguard the historical finds here as well as make them available for public viewing. As of date, the museum houses artworks, ethnology, porcelain objects, paper paintings, sculptures, metal objects, archaeology, woodcarvings, palm leaf images, manuscripts as well as oil paintings. The museum is open from nine in the morning till five in the evening and is closed every Monday.
